Project Description:

I completed this cross-media project during my time working as a graphic designer for Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University. Barrett’s design team takes on social media, print, and merch requests from various honors-aligned clubs and organizations that want to promote their activities.

This particular project was for the Barrett Inn of Court event held annually on the Tempe campus, in which students have the chance to speak with law professionals and discuss topics related to the field. The client requested desktop/TV slide, flyer, Instagram post, and Instagram story graphics that would inform students of the opportunity and encourage them to attend.

Designs and Decisions:

The Barrett design team’s number one priority is to adhere to the Barrett brand guide as strictly as possible, while also expressing creativity and originality between each project.

With the brand guide (or as my boss would call it, our “Bible”) in mind, I had several design aspects cemented into the concept. These included:

  • Leading and tracking of titles versus body copy
  • Primary color scheme and color ratio
  • Inclusion of logos, QR code, and content of text

My challenge was to create compelling and informational graphics that would excite the target audience (students interested in/studying law) while also staying true to Barrett’s character. I decided to first look for images that portrayed a sense of academia and sophistication. The hero image of the designs, with the statue of Lady Justice, fit this description well. I then blurred the background of the library and color corrected the image to better align with Barrett’s color scheme. With Lady Justice as the focus, I formatted the title, event details, and copy to complement her natural curved shape.

Once the core design was established, I reworked the content as needed to fit on the different dimensions of each deliverable. This created a dynamic yet strong event identity that worked well in each application.

Results:

Out of nearly 100 projects I worked on for Barrett, this one was one of my highest-praised designs.

Near the end of the Spring 2024 semester at ASU I submitted this project to the GIT Awards, a design competition for graphic information technology students. Projects are viewed and ranked by active industry professionals, and 1st-3rd place are given industry awards to be used on resumes and job applications. I am pleased to say that I won first place in the cross-media campaigns category with this project!

BONUS: I was able to catch the flyer out in the wild while walking on campus one day… take a look!
